It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these. Weeds is definitely the most ridiculous show I’ve seen. It has a similar plot-line to Breaking Bad; parent starts selling drugs to support their family (only BB is twenty times better). It’s the kind of show that doesn’t take itself too seriously and can be casually enjoyed without much thought. The first two seasons are the best; afterwards it gets more ludicrous but is still entertaining. Here’s my take on some of the key characters.

Nancy Botwin

I’m really not sure what I think of Nancy. I thought she was kind of badass initially, but also crazy and ridiculous, not to mention unbelievably selfish. The fact that she sells weed to support her kids rather than getting a regular job tells all. She embodies the nature of Weeds and all its absurdist humour. She’s a terrible mother, and overall insane person, but she’s fun to watch. Plus – and I had to say it – she’s fricken gorgeous.

Celia Hodes

Man, Celia is a massive pain; hated her initially, then just found her super funny as the show got more stupid. Celia is kind of interesting; she’s a bitch but we also feel for her at times. She enters a drug world with little-to-no idea of what she’s doing, getting hooked on cocaine despite her anti-drug tirade in earlier seasons. One of the best bits of Weeds is when her daughter holds her ransom and calls everyone who knows Celia, and no one cares about Celia enough to give her the money. Made me die of laughter, though I also felt a bit sorry for her.

Andy

Best character for sure. He’s the Roger Smith/Rick Sanchez of Weeds, the one who keeps us watching and makes things fun. Pretty much every scene involving Andy is comedy-gold.

Silas

This guy is an annoying brat, but he’s also smart and again, fun to watch. (I don’t take Weeds seriously enough to have strong feelings towards any of the characters.) Silas’ behaviour can pretty much be blamed on his neglectful mother and lack of strong father figure (Andy has the mentality of a five-year-old).

Shane

He was my favourite character for a long time. My respect for him declined when he wanked to a picture of his naked mother (this is the kind of show that can pull off something so awful and make it funny). Shane is this genius wiz-kid who knows too much and is super weird. He probably gets the most negatively affected by his mother’s selfish life choices.

Doug

Hm, not much of an opinion of him. He’s just a character that adds to the overall daft humour like Dean. (How he and Celia didn’t get divorced after three episodes is a mystery to me.)

(I got lazy and didn’t finish doing all the characters, so, ah, yeah. Here are some other TV character discussion posts of mine.)
