These are my ten favourite episodes of Community. One of the best sitcoms I have ever seen, this show fantastically blends heart and soul with meta-commentary. These are all my personal favourites, not the ones that are ‘objectively’ the best. It was really hard but I was going on the ones I mostly enjoyed and thought had a mix of good humour and interesting concepts.
1) S3E4: Remedial Chaos Theory
This is my overall favourite episode of Community. I love everything about it. It’s witty, clever, and explores the multiverse which is a concept I always enjoy. It could easily be boring and repetitive, but instead it’s hilarious, intelligent and emotionally solid.
2) S2E10: Mixology Certification
One of the most heartfelt episodes of Community. A Troy-centred episode about coming-of-age as an adult, and realising that those older than you don’t necessarily know better.
3) S1E21: Contemporary American Poultry
This is my favourite episode from season 1 and one of my all-time favourite episodes of Community. I’m a big fan of Goodfellas, The Godfather and The Sopranos so enjoyed seeing the Mafia homage. Abed is also my favourite Community character and this episode is centred around him.
4) S2E14: Advanced Dungeons and Dragons
It’s really sad that this amazing episode has been taken off Netflix. There is a petition here to bring it back. This is hands-down one of Community‘s best. I watched it on YouTube, enjoying it so much I watched it twice in a row.
5) S1E23: Modern Warfare
I preferred this first paintball episode to the ones in season 2. I’m not a big fan of Westerns which is probably why, although I appreciate the style. Still,’Modern Warfare’ is one of my favourite episodes because it is super fun and ridiculous and finally has Jeff and Britta release their ‘tension’…haha.
6) S5E8: App Developments and Condiments
Season 5 isn’t hailed as one of the best Community seasons. For me, it ranks as my fourth favourite season, with season 4 and season 6 being underneath. However, I LOVED this episode. It reminded me a lot of the Black Mirror episode ‘Nosedive.’ It’s smart and fully-fleshed, similar in tone to season 2 and 3 episodes.
7) S2E15: Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking
I think this episode is the funniest for me. Pierce is one of my favourite characters because he’s such a dickhead. Seeing him pissing off everyone cracks me up so much. And no one can forget Troy’s reaction to LeVar Burton as one of the most epic moments of the show.
8) S3E20: Digital Estate Planning
One of the amazing things about Community is that it brilliantly mixes character-centered episodes with conceptual episodes. This one is a conceptual episode that also strengthens their character dynamics. It’s also fun seeing the gaming concept. I’m not a gamer but I loved it in this episode.
9) S2E20: Competitive Wine Tasting
This is one of my favourite episodes of Community because it’s just a pure episode; no high-concept, no gimmicks, just heart. The character development between Jeff and Pierce is heartfelt, and the seed is sewn for Britta and Troy’s romance (they have more chemistry in this episode than during their entire season 4 relationship). It also has some hilarious moments, like Abed proving the teacher wrong and Troy screaming ‘MY EMOTIONS!’ This is a pure sitcom episode, with all the character heart of Community.
10) S4E11: Basic Human Anatomy
I know fans of Community enjoy picking apart the gas-leak-year. While season 4 isn’t as good as seasons 1, 2, and 3, it isn’t ‘terrible.’ I preferred it to season 6 which is my least favourite season because it wasn’t the same without Troy, Pierce, and Shirley. (I did really like Frankie and Elroy though.) The old jokes and gags from previous sitcoms were also recycled which tends to happen with sitcoms as they go on.
The only season 6 episode I really loved was the last one. For season 4, I LOVED this episode, and also enjoyed Heroic Origins, Intro to Knots, and Paranormal Parentage. This episode has so much heart, and really showed the extent to which Troy and Abed’s friendship is important. It handled the break-up of Troy and Britta beautifully. (The thing that most irks me about season 4 is that Troy and Britta as a couple had so much lovely potential, yet this season really shat on that potential.)
Some honourable mentions include: Cooperative Calligraphy, Messianic Myths and Ancient Peoples, Advanced Gay, Heroic Origins, Cooperative Polygraphy, Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television, and Pilot.
(Don’t hate me for not mentioning Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas; lovely as it is, it’s not one of my favourites.)
