This seems to be a large issue in the UK. There are arguments for and against breastfeeding in public and to what extent it should be done. This is a topic I am not fully sure where I stand upon, so I will list both reasons for and against that I can think of, and then leave you to state where you stand upon it.

For: Breastfeeding is perfectly natural and healthy and better for the baby. The UK has one of the lowest rates of breastfeeding in the world. Perhaps that is due to the sexualisation of female breasts; yes, breasts are sexual, but context is important, and when a woman is feeding her child there is clearly nothing sexual about that. There are plenty of tribes and cultures across the world where women walk around with nothing covering their breasts or breast feed publicly and no one is against it. Perhaps if social attitudes towards the female body were to change, breastfeeding would be seen as a healthy thing for babies, as opposed to ‘provocative.’

Against: It’s good to be subtle as no one wants to be sitting somewhere seeing a lady’s breast hanging out. If women are to breast feed in public they should cover something over their bosom as it can be uncomfortable to those around them to watch a lady feeding her child. Having women sitting in public with their breasts on show is provocative and we need to be decent and respectful.

What do you think? I can see both sides of the argument, though based on my overall attitude to life I guess I side more with being ‘for’ public breastfeeding. Of course there are other points but these are just a few that I believe are the main reasons from each side. Let me know where you stand on this topic and what the best way to handle it is.
