I’ve loved Spongebob since I was a child; it’s one of my favourite shows. But I’ve always been a bit uncertain about Patrick. I’ve been watching some interesting theory videos on Patrick from Spongebob. There are a lot of theories that suggest he is a psychopath. As someone who has researched a lot on psychopaths and read books/seen films featuring them, I can confidently assume he isn’t one, as psychopaths are cold and calculating and Patrick is often portrayed as warm and fun. It is possible he is a sociopath, or is just a manipulative not-so-intelligent person. There is a theory that suggests he has multiple personality disorder, which I will link below.
I’m not sure what I think about the dude, but I will describe episodes where Patrick behaves ‘strangely’ and isn’t all he appears:
I’m with Stupid. In this episode, Patrick freaks out because his parents are coming for the day, and he wants to show them he’s smart. Spongebob, being the loving, good-natured and naive person he is, suggests to act dumb in order to make Patrick seem smart. At first it goes well, but then Patrick starts manipulating the situation by making fun of his friend and acting like he really is stupid, and getting his parents in on it. Ironically, Patrick’s ‘parents’ are so stupid they don’t even realise till the end of the episode that they ‘don’t have a son.’ Patrick’s real parents are standing outside. This suggests he is either so stupid he can’t remember his parents, or has trouble forming real relationships with people.
New Student Starfish. Patrick comes to school with Spongebob, however constantly gets him into trouble with Mrs Puff. He draws comical images of her but then lets Spongebob take the blame. This is a very cruel thing to do, and shows he doesn’t really care about Spongebob, he just likes seeing him get told off.
Life of Crime. Patrick and Spongebob steal a balloon; it pops, and they don’t realise it’s National Free Balloon day so they freak out and run away. They have no food besides two candy bars Spongebob has for each of them. Patrick wolfs down his and then accuses Spongebob of eating it. (Damn, he’s really not the best of friends is he?) At the end of the episode, the police officers give Spongebob and Patrick a lollipop each, and Patrick goes ‘which one of you flatfoots stole my lollipop.’ They all laugh, but then he goes ‘I mean it’ and the episode ends. This shows egocentricity on his part, and thinking he is entitled to anything.
The Sponge who could Fly. At the end of this episode, Patrick suggests to Spongebob that they ‘fly down to the shops.’ Spongebob says he is done with flying, and as soon as his back is turned, Patrick flies away. (Everyone acts like a cunt in that episode anyway; poor Spongebob just wants to fly with the jellyfish but they all act like he owes them errands). Patrick flying could have just been used for comedic effect, or it could be another example of his lying persona, and hiding things about himself.
The Card. This episode has been mentioned a lot in theories. Spongebob buys lots of packs of cards, hoping to get the super rare card, however doesn’t get it. Patrick buys the last pack which is filled with cards. Throughout the whole episode he goes through all of these dangerous random places, and when Spongebob asks why, he says ‘you can’t expect my usual brand of stupidity; I like to mix it up, keep you on your toes.’ This could have been used again as a breaking the 4th wall technique by the writers for humorous effect, but based on Patrick’s strange behaviour, perhaps he is hinting at the audience that he’s not as ‘stupid’ as he pretends to be.
Sunbleached. Spongebob and Patrick get themselves tanned in order to get into a party. Patrick leaves Spongebob in there for six hours. We don’t know if he just forgot or if he did it on purpose, but either way it shows his carelessness.
Valentine’s Day. Another example of Patrick’s egotism; Spongebob plans this amazing surprise for his friend, unfortunately there are some hiccups, but then Patrick trashes the whole Valentine’s Day fun fair and spoils everyone else’s good time. Sure, he’s upset because it looks like Spongebob has given everyone else apart from his friend gifts, but trashing the entire fair in a burst of psychotic rage is not a sensible thing to do. (This is coming from someone who’s had extreme anger outbursts; when you’re in them you barely know what you’re doing, but afterwards you realise it’s completely stupid and selfish).
Dumped. Gary seems to abandon Spongebob and becomes really close to Patrick – at the end of the episode we realise it’s because of his cookie. The way Patrick behaves is so flippant; he bluntly says Spongebob just needs to let go and that Gary wants to be with him. Patrick knows how much Spongebob loves Gary, yet is prepared to just let himself take his pet snail away.
Rule of Dumb. Patrick is told that he is royalty, and then becomes a tyrant. Luckily, he realises this at the end by going ‘what have I become!’ and gives up his royal stature. The face he sees in the mirror is Patrick’s ‘darker’ self, going ‘knock knock, who’s there? You are.’ Perhaps Patrick has schizophrenia, or does have MPD.
Yours, Mine and Mine. Perhaps the best example of this idiot’s selfishness. Mr Krabs makes a Krusty Krab toy. Spongebob buys it and then offers to share it with Patrick. And what does Patrick do? Hog it all for himself.
I could go on forever but I think I’ve made my point and presented some good evidence as to how much of a douche this guy is. He may be the nastiest character in Bikini Bottom. He’s a horrible friend to Spongebob, he acts entitled and spoilt, he manipulates everyone around him by acting ‘lovable’ and stupid, he never takes responsibility for his behaviour or apologises – all in all, Patrick Star is an arsehole.
